Meet Stephen Lawrie

Native New Zealander and longtime Alaskan fisherman Stephen Lawrie is motivated by his curiosity of humanity and place and has explored this theme in his painting over the past 50 years.

“When I meet someone, I do wonder what their story is. Everybody wants to be seen, and that's what I work to do. My work has been evolving for over 50 years and continues to grow with each new connection I make. I consider what I do to be very personal between myself and my subject. I look to reflect what I know is in all of us; a commonality of human spirit.”

Lawrie paints using acrylic combined with graphite pencil on loose, stretched canvas. The works are large scale with the figures ranging from from slightly larger than life to three or four times larger than life.
