This Thing We Call The Ocean
“This Thing We Call The Ocean is the name of the new exhibition by local artist Stephen Lawrie, an exhibition located in the genuine local old Pioneer Bar, where nostalgia and stories meet and converse, most of the stories centered around this thing we call the ocean. The ocean, as a matter of fact, gives form to this community of fish-people, becoming its core, but it also extends to those in relation with it- the neighbors, the spouses, the grown-up kids, the friends, and now, the tourists. In one way or another, many of those stories end up being told or retold at the P. Bar, with Rita and her army of bartenders becoming custodians of voices, memories, and hopes, and also, warriors of one or two bad tantrums, and judges of quite many tintinnabulations thanks to the old perfectly rusty mermaid bell calling sailors in.” Curator Maite Lorente.
The opening happened on Saturday, June 21, 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. It was event focused on the art. Afterwards, attendees enjoyed the art in the true spirit of the Pioneer Bar vibe. The exhibition hang there until August 3.
This exhibition was sponsored by the Hames Corporation, with thanks to Roger and Mary Hames, Chris Heim, manager of the Pioneer Bar and the Sitka Conservation Society.
